Position Information Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The School of Government works to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government. The School offers up to 200 courses, webinars, and conferences for more than 12,000 public officials each year. Faculty members annually publish approximately 50 books, reports, articles, bulletins, and other print and online content related to state and local government. The School is also home to a nationally ranked graduate program in public administration and specialized centers focused on information technology and environmental finance.
Position Summary This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Legal and Policy Research Associate will be responsible for performing legal and policy research, analysis, and writing to support the short- and long-term needs of SOG faculty. Initially, the Associate will dedicate approximately 50% of their time to providing policy research and writing support for the Criminal Justice Innovation Lab (the Lab). For this work, the Associate will be located with the Lab team at an off-campus location.
For the remaining 50% of the Associate’s time, they will be a member of a larger research team that is responsible for research, cite-checking, legal and policy writing, reviewing draft publications, and providing other related research assistance. In this role, the Legal and Policy Research Associate may support faculty research in a wide variety of fields, including but not limited to public administration and management, public policy, leadership, local government law, employment law, criminal law, civil procedure, and judicial administration.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. This experience may be related to the direction/oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Strong legal research and writing skills, organizational skills, oral communication skills, and computer word processing skills are required. The ideal candidate will be meticulous and have demonstrated project management skills as well as experience in practical research.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Strong preference for individuals holding a J.D. Interest and or experience in government is helpful.
