Job description
Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is seeking a talented individual to fill the role of Disaster Response and Volunteer Specialist (US and Canada). This individual will provide program and technical support to affiliates preparing for and responding to disasters, with a focus on volunteer management. This individual will coordinate the Disaster Corps Volunteer program, consisting of skilled volunteer professionals deployed to boost capacity of affiliates, as well as the Mobile Response Unit program consisting of a fleet of vehicles stocked with disaster response tools deployed post-disaster. This individual will also contribute to increasing capacity of US and Canada affiliates to design, implement, report and evaluate Disaster Risk Reduction and Response (DR3) programs, to increase sustainability. In addition, this individual will contribute to the development and delivery of trainings and toolkits, assist with grant management, support communications and information management, and provide logistical and administrative support to the DR3 team.

This position may be remotely based within the US, involve up to 20% travel and is anticipated to last 15 months. This position is eligible for full benefits.

  • Coordinate the DCV program and budget
  • Facilitate deployments: identifying capacity building opportunities; recruiting and placing DCVs in coordination with US operations and affiliates; tracking deployment activities; conducting follow-up evaluations, and recognizing volunteers
  • Cultivate mission-aligned partnerships to enhance volunteer engagement opportunities
  • Advance the role of volunteers and recruit new volunteers through internal and external networks
  • Track and reimburse authorized expenses and report financial stewardship to donors
  • Lead the development and delivery of training to newly recruited volunteers, Habitat for Humanity affiliates, and existing DCVs
  • Recruitment, development, and deployment of an affiliate leadership team, as well as general volunteers interested in disaster-affected affiliates, to create a more robust network for affiliates/state support organizations post-disaster
  • Support International scale up of program
  • Contribute to funding strategies and proposal development to support program
  • Ensure proper monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning is documented and incorporated into program strategy

  • Contribute to increasing capacity of US Canada affiliates to design, implement, report and evaluate DR3 programs on their own to increase sustainability
  • Monitor hazards potentially impacting the Habitat network in US and Canada
  • Implement Pathways to Permanence methodology among the US affiliate network with risk reduction at the core
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of DR3 training courses to support the overall training goals of the DR3 department
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of DR3 resources - checklists, toolkits, templates, technical guides and standard operating procedures - to build capacity of affiliates/state support organizations
  • Assist with grant management, proposal development and donor presentations
  • Support transition of affiliate to US Disaster Long-Term Recovery team
  • Serves as a member of the HFHI DR Rapid Deployment Roster

  • Coordinate the MRU program and budget
  • Track vehicle maintenance; deployment activity, baseline inventory and upkeep of tools for each MRU
  • Ensure policies and regulations regarding vehicle usage are followed by state support organizations and affiliate host sites
  • Coordinate deployment of staff and/or volunteers as needed for transport of vehicles
  • Track and reimburse authorized expenses and report financial stewardship to donors
  • Coordinate with state support organizations for engagement outside of their area of responsibility in the event of a large-scale response or national priority
  • Scale up program in an effort to expand geographic coverage, reduce response time, and create redundancy
  • Determine host state support organizations for each MRU in coordination with the state support organization Field Operations Manager
  • Contribute to funding strategies and proposal development to support program
  • Ensure proper monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning is documented and incorporated into program strategy

  • Support Publishing Coordinator for US/Canada focused disaster content posted on Habitat’s intranet
  • Contribute to annual Disaster Response Simulation, After Actions Review, and updating of playbook
  • Contribute to development of tools and resources for data analysis and assessing affiliate performance
  • Continually monitor effectiveness of DR3 Affiliate Statistical Report and Housing Production Report and incorporate changes accordingly
  • Provide general administrative support to the US/Canada program team


  • Pursuant to current HFHI policy, this position requires full vaccination against COVID-19, except to the extent such requirement is prohibited by applicable law
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in volunteer management and disaster response programming
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Team, PowerPoint) and knowledge of GIS
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Ability to network and form partnerships/alliances with organizations both inside and outside of HFHI
  • Strong leadership, planning, organizational, and diplomatic skills
  • Ability to maintain cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Willingness to learn about a variety of disaster response issues and perform tasks accordingly

  • Formal training in disaster risk management and volunteer management
  • Ability to drive operational vehicles in post-disaster environments
  • Fluency in language other than English
