Job description


The Court Clerk performs intermediate skilled administrative support work for Municipal Court operations and related work as apparent or assigned.


High school diploma or equivalent with considerable experience providing administrative support in a legal setting; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

Preferred: Associate degree and Municipal Court experience.

The successful candidate will have well-rounded communications and accounting skillsets. Experience with Show-Me Courts software. Certified thru Missouri State University Office of Access and Outreach or working towards certification.


· Proficient in verbal and writing skills, including a command of grammar, usage, and vocabulary.

· Ability to write clear, concise reports and court correspondence.

· Skill in public relations and communicating with a wide variety of people.

· Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, citizens, management, outside agencies.

· Skill in organizing workflow and managing multiple projects.

· Knowledge of municipal government court operations including court docket, traffic citation, and collection procedures.

· Proficient in the use of computers and related equipment, hardware, and software applicable to area of assignment.

· General knowledge of bookkeeping terminology, methods, procedures, and equipment.

· Ability to translate complex technical material into simple and understandable concepts.

· Ability to work under deadlines and stressful situations.

· Ability to define and resolve problems quickly and effectively.

· Ability to work with confidential information.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, co-workers, and the public.

· Able to respond courteously and informatively to citizen requests for information.

Under the direct supervision of the Court Administrator. The Court Clerk will not oversee or direct other employees.


1. Required attendance at evening court sessions to handle the payment of fines and costs during the court sessions.

2. Act as Violations Bureau Clerk by assisting all walk-in customers.

3. Process traffic tickets by downloading them into Show-Me Courts thru the PA Portal and printing them.

4. Assemble and prepare court files for traffic cases filed by the Prosecutor, and file them in the appropriate locations by court dates.

5. Receive and separate all mail for the court and record all checks and money orders received through the mail.

6. Receipt all payments received in the mail or in person and balance all deposits.

7. Mail appropriate correspondence to defendant and/or attorney.

8. Answer most incoming phone calls to the court office, and direct to other court personnel as necessary.

9. Separate and file all closed files per the record retention schedule in Court Operating Rule 8.

10. Assist in preparing and clearing court dockets as needed.

11. Assist in the processing of attorney entries on cases and filing the appropriate motions from attorneys, as needed.

12. Assume responsibility of the court office in the absence of the Court Administrator and other court personnel.

13. Perform all other court related duties and fulfill responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Court Administrator.

Work Environment:

· Must frequently refine existing work methods and develop new techniques, concepts or programs within established limits or policies

· Work is typically performed indoors at a desk or table with intermittent sitting, standing, and stooping. Must lift light objects such as cameras, video equipment, laptop computers (less than 25 pounds) as a requirement of the job.


· Frequent contact with federal and state officials and administrators, the public, external and internal contacts requiring tact and diplomacy are requirements of the job.
