Roles & Responsibilities:

A bioinformatician position is available in the Functional Epidemiology lab (PI: Magdalena Janecka, PhD;) in the Departments of Psychiatry and Genetic & Genomic Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, with a focus on elucidating the mechanisms underlying epidemiological findings linked to neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders (NNDs).

The Janecka lab focuses on elucidating mechanisms underlying the observational associations between early-life environment and the risk for NDDs, integrating insights from epidemiology and genomic studies. Our key interest is in the role of parental and early-life factors. We are currently seeking a bioinformatician with a strong background in epidemiology, genetic epidemiology and/or causal inference.

Broad project themes will include, but will not be restricted to:

  • Investigating the causal contribution of early-life complications (related to birth and/or pregnancy) in NNDs. Methods will include: analysis of electronic health records, gene expression, epidemiological and epigenetic data; use of polygenic risk methods to investigating shared genetic factors underlying the relevant phenotypes; Mendelian randomization.
  • Interrogation of the effects of parental health and medication use in the prenatal period on the risk of NNDs; methods will include: novel approaches to analyze epidemiological data that generate stronger inference of underlying causality; use of polygenic risk methods to investigating shared genetic factors underlying the relevant phenotypes; Mendelian randomization; analysis of epigenetic alterations associated with parental medication use.

Specific Job Duties:

  • Perform analyses and method development as outlined in the above summary and as generated in conjunction with Dr. Janecka.
  • Assist and share expertise with other members of the Lab and broader Mount Sinai research community.


  • B.S. bioinformatics, epidemiology, genetic epidemiology or a related subject; M.S. preferred
  • The ideal candidate will have a quantitative background and M.S in bioinformatics, epidemiology, genetic epidemiology or a related subject. This post will focus on the etiology of neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders; research background in the field is desirable, but not essential, and motivated candidates with an interest in the topic will be strongly considered. The post will require excellent quantitative and computational skills (e.g. R / Bash scripting). Successful candidates will be expected to present their findings at conference presentations and in scientific publications, therefore excellent oral and written communication skills are essential
  • 3 years’ experience required
  • Working experience with genetics or statistics analysis software and online resources. Experience in programming environments such as Matlab, R statistical package, BioConductor, Perl or C++

The salary range for the role is $58,661.00 - $80,000.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
